Because I was a sculptor for 30 years, I have found the rectangular picture plane to be relatively inert so I have played with irregular shapes both cut out of paper and created by assembling panels and other geometric forms to create complex picture planes that have their own energy. I then have to work with that energy just as I had to work with the grain and trust of a piece of wood or stone. I may do something abstract or I may suggest landscape depending on the demands of that form. I also work with the plain rectangular picture plane to explore layering color and design, acrylic and oils playing off against each other.
