Ambiguity, in narrative/interpretation and material/process, is an essential part of my practice. Beginning with a vague vision of each piece, I bring definition to the space through numerous gestural glazing layers. Oil paint is helpful in this slow process. The original surface peaks through the paint layers, so I’ve started priming surfaces with a clear gloss that reflects light and preserves color and texture. My attention drifts through the surface, simultaneously adding shadow and scraping light, so that opacity and transparency, resolution and ambiguity, work together to create the image. I tend to “see” space through light and shadow more easily than color given my background in black and white analog photography, so many of my works have a limited pallet and/or dramatic lighting.  I have included works in progress to both demonstrate the stages of rendering, as well as give an idea of future pieces.
